I’m now on the 24th day of my very own self-imposed 30-day blog post challenge which also propelled me to restart doing other things I love and one of them is reading books as I’ve mentioned in my previous blog post. But it’s not just reading books I love per se, but blogging about what I’ve read as well.

Something Borrowed is the first book of Emily Giffin I’ve ever read. And because I loved it so much, I ended up eventually buying all of her books!  I remember dropping by one afternoon in Powerbooks at Festival Mall because there was a sale. As usual, I looked at the section of my favorite authors (Nicholas Sparks, Sophie Kinsella, Danielle Steel to name a few) just to see if there’s anything new. Then there was this movie trailer being shown on their wall TV. The title of the movie is Something Borrowed. I didn’t give it much attention at first until I got a bit intrigued. The movie, as it turned out, is based on a book so I immediately looked for it (it was just right there on the bestseller stand) and purchased a copy. (Much, much later, I watched the film and it was awesome as well!)

It took a while before I  got to read its first page. I was still in the middle of EAT PRAY LOVE when I decided what the heck, I’m bored out of my wits, I’m gonna start reading this Emily Giffin book and see if she’s any better than Gilbert. So I did. And hallelujah! I wasn’t disappointed!

From the moment I read the first words, I couldn’t put the book down. I only had a few minutes to read each day before going to bed and even then, I got to finish it in a week’s time.

The book started with Rachel (the main character) turning 30. She is a lawyer, single, and super hated her job. When she was a little girl, she imagined her life to be perfect at the age of 30. She and her best friend would be married with kids and be living a beautiful, meaningful life. It seemed to be coming true for her best friend Darcy who was engaged at the moment to her perfect lawyer boyfriend who happens to be the guy Rachel has been crushing on since their days in law school… yup, they were close and were classmates!

From there, the story evolved and eventually something that’s not supposed to happen, happened and the rest, as they say, is history.

I like the way how Emily Giffin made me hate Darcy while I was loving Rachel’s character at every turn of the page. A part of me could relate to Rachel since I felt like I had that kind of relationship with my best friend too when we were in our teens.

Anyway, it’s a very good chick lit and I definitely recommend it. It’s a nice read perfect for the beach or something to take your mind off your current worries. After I read it, I couldn’t wait to buy Something Blue, the other side of the story – Darcy’s story. I’ve always wondered if I could hate her more? LOL.
