How to Market During this Time of an Unprecedented Pandemic?

Speaking from experience, a week after Covid-19 was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), Mahal and I stopped our Tuscany Highlands business. The halt per se wasn’t as abrupt, but, day by day, we just found ourselves not working on the business. It started when our farm people told us that the most recent consignments of fresh oyster mushrooms at various stores in Claveria were being returned because no tourists and customers were visiting Claveria and no one was buying. The shops where we were consigning are located on tourist spots and along the highway where local and foreign tourists usually visit and drive by. With everyone being asked to stay at home, there were no more customers visiting these shops. So all fresh oyster mushroom harvests were sent back to the farm to be dried and stored for future use instead.

Then the sale of our mushroom products like MUSIGA (Mushroom Sili Garlic Paste), PALAMI (mushroom Palapa), Mushroom POLVORON and Mushroom CHIPS stopped as well. Despite our efforts to market, no sales were coming in.

Then our Mushroom Hands-On Cultivation Training was put on hold indefinitely for fear of spreading the coronavirus.

So one day, we just stopped our business from running and concentrated on surviving this pandemic as a family. We have our savings, extra food and other supplies, plus I still have a little bit of income coming from my online work so we’re still okay.

But do small businesses really have to stop marketing? Do we really have to completely stop doing business? Is it being tone-deaf or inconsiderate to continue selling stuff at this time when no one seems to be buying non-essential stuff?  Continue reading

Covid-19: How It’s Affecting My Mental and Emotional Health

OVERVIEW

While most of you have probably been in quarantine / lockdown for about a month or so now, I’ve been imposing it on and off upon myself and my family since I first heard about the coronavirus in the news the last week of January. We were preparing for another batch of Hands-On Mushroom Training at that time when the Coronavirus Outbreak began circulating in the media. My “prepper” instinct tingled and I started having worst-case scenario visions in my head. (“prepper” is a person who believes a catastrophic disaster or emergency is likely to occur in the future and makes active preparations for it, typically by stockpiling food, ammunition, and other supplies.) That was the time I started buying a little bit more than the usual number of masks and alcohol bottles we use for mushroom training just in case the outbreak becomes an epidemic, or worse, a pandemic. And because we had plans of going back to Cebu to set up another Mushroom farm, I almost decided not to go for fear of contracting the virus during our travel. This was around Jan. 25-28 when the rest of the world didn’t care much about  the Coronavirus yet, and much less about preparing for it.

Updates in the Midst of Covid-19: My Health, Tuscany Highlands, Training Workshops CDO, BuQid, Travels and Celebrations

This is probably the longest I haven’t blogged. It’s been so long that I have to read what I wrote last time coz I don’t remember anymore, lol. And it made me cringe a bit that my last post before this was about my health and my suspicion of having Dengue which happened before all this Novel Corona Virus, now called Covid-19, started hitting the news.

Anyway, as an OC person, I want to have some semblance of chronology about what has been happening to me the past several months so this long overdue blog update might be a bit long. Just bear with me. I’ll try to only give you the summaries and I’ll just write more about them, one topic at a time, on my next blog posts. For now, here are the abridged versions:

Christmas Giveaway

TUSCANY HIGHLANDS MUSIGA AND MUSHROOM POLVORON 2ND ANNIVERSARY and EARLY CHRISTMAS GIVEAWAY!!!

Hello September!

At last, the Ber months are here — my favorite last few months of the year because it means that Christmas is just around the corner, Jose Mari Chan’s Christmas in Our Hearts has started playing in the radio again, and of course, my most favorite holiday, Halloween, is happening before all the pre-Christmas and New Year hullabaloo! In short, I’m just in a very festive mood! Weeeee!!!

A huge part of this joy I’m feeling right now is the realization that I really am blessed despite all the seemingly stressful dramas I indulge myself in from time to time (lol). I am officially and legally single, I am loved, I have my babies with me, we are healthy, Mahal and I are growing our businesses and life together, and it’s all great!

And because of these blessings and the overwhelming gratitude I am feeling towards God and our life in general, I am also inspired to give back. We don’t have many material things as we have been living sort of a semi-minimalist lifestyle since I exchanged my big Alabang townhouse lifestyle to tiny pad living in Cagayan de Oro City, but we can definitely give some things to people, albeit strangers, we consider important to us, and these “some things” are no other than our farm products, for our precious target market, the very people we would like to keep serving through our organic mushroom food product offerings.

Musiga

Musiga (Mushroom Sili Garlic Paste) by Tuscany Highlands – Participating at CDO’s La Fiesta Grande Bazaar in Ayala Centrio

Since we got back from our very long road trip, it’s just been work, work, work! Aside from taking care of all my client tasks, Mahal and I have also been busy getting ready for this weekend’s bazaar in Cagayan de Oro — La Fiesta Grande Bazaar to be held at Ayala Centrio Mall in the downtown area. The bazaar will be from August 23, Friday, until August 25, Sunday.

MUSIGA HISTORY

We’ve joined a bazaar before when we first launched our Mushroom Chili Paste and just focused on online selling and consignments after that (see post here: https://momtraneur.com/2018/05/13/tuscany-highlands-organic-farm-mushroom-chili-paste-how-it-came-to-be/)

We received 100% positive reviews from our customers in terms of the taste, but a few suggested that maybe we can improve on our label. Our very first label looked like this:

Haciendera Mode On: Tuscany Highlands Virtual Farm Tour

People would always ask us if they can visit our farm. They could if they really want to. But because it’s such a far away place to go to being situated on top of a mountain where the roads are not yet paved, and the weather can be erratic, I’m going to just give you a virtual tour of our farm instead. You can click this link to begin your tour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYpJ-u3yNtA&feature=youtu.be Or watch the video below…

Tuscany Highlands Farm is a set of scattered farmlands totaling to 8 hectares. These are mostly lands of Mahal’ parents, 2 hectares of which are personally awarded to Mahal by the Dept. of Agrarian Reform.

We have yet to fully develop the lands so what you’ll see are mostly corn fields, coffee forests, mountainous grasslands and the parcel of land (about 3-4 hectares where we are currently planting our green leafy vegetables, mushrooms, bell peppers, chili peppers and corn.

Come with me as I show you our farm

Tuscany Highlands Organic Farm Mushroom Chili Paste Customer Reviews (Updated Aug. 6, 2018)

I’m now on the 27th day of my very own self-imposed 30-day blog post challenge which also propelled me to restart doing other things I love and one of them is just basically sharing with you through my blog whatever I feel like sharing and today’s it’s going to be about our Mushroom Chili Paste and what our customers say about it!

If you’ve been reading my blog, you’d know that last week, Mahal and I joined a Back-to-School Bazaar here at LimKetKai Mall, Cagayan de Oro City. It was our very first time to publicly display our very first farm product like that — Tuscany Highlands Organic Farm Mushroom Chili Paste. The goal of that endeavor was not really to make high sales (although it would be a bonus if we profit from it) but to introduce it to the public. We will be joining other future bazaars as our budget sees fit so watch out for that.

Prior to that, we had a soft launching of our Mushroom Chili Paste online, among my Facebook friends. And I’m happy to say that we’ve been getting some positive reviews about our first set of customers so far…

Back-to-School Limketkai Bazaar

Back-to-School-Bazaar in Limketkai Cagayan de Oro: Tuscany Highlands Organic Farm Mushroom Chili Paste is Joining!

Because it’s  the end of May, that only means one thing for most parents, especially moms — it’s going to be back to school again for your kids pretty soon (Tuz is still 2 years old, so I still have 2-3 years to prepare for that, thank God!) If you’re already shopping for various stuff for your kids, or for yourself, do drop by LimketKai Event Center at the 2nd floor. You might just see products that fit your lifestyle and budget and that includes having the chance to purchase our farm-produced MUSHROOM CHILI PASTE!

Oh by the way, I’m now on the 22nd day of my very own self-imposed 30-day blog post challenge which also propelled me to restart doing other things I love and one of them is selling. (It’s not so obvious noh? Hihi!) You can check my previous mini entrepreneurial ventures here and here and you will know from my posts that whenever possible, I really find the time to offer quality products to my network that give value to them whether they be clothes, homemade soaps, etc. Then last year, we started setting up our farm, Tuscany Highlands Organic Farm and the first product we came up with is our very own Mushroom Chili Paste.
